While it may be physically beneficial to use Drug Replacement Therapy agents, it's not the best route to encourage if you want long term Recovery for your patients. I'm just basing this opinion on 36 years of working with addicts to help them change their lives on a permanent-ish basis. Most people who go with the Methadone/Syboxone/etc treatment don't make it in acceptable numbers. You need the other elements that Recovery programs have; group and individual trauma talk/social therapy and lifestyle mentoring, etc. And of course the addict needs to be ready to stop and never "relapse"...which is more psychology and magic than science. However....it will save your county a lot of dough to use DRT methodologies. Harm reduction certainly is cheaper than nothing. But do we want to keep these folks in suspended animation or get them back into society? ProTip: if your local authority decides to roll hard with Harm Reduction, make sure the implementation *does not* discourage full abstinence recovery.
